Patrizio “Pato” Spagnoletto, former head of marketing at Hulu, joined Discovery as CEO of global marketing for the company’s direct-to-consumer business.
Spagnoletto, who is based in Los Angeles, will be reporting to JB Perrette, President and CEO of Discovery International.
This year Discovery launched the live streaming service Discovery + in the United States and other territories and is in the process of rolling it out globally.
Spagnoletto will occupy a newly created role and will look to cement Discovery + in the competitive streaming arena. He will have broad responsibilities for subscriber acquisition, retention and growth, media and analytics, brand awareness, creative marketing development and strategy, and consumer insights. In addition to overseeing the direct-to-consumer marketing team, Spagnoletto will also work closely with US networks and local international marketing teams to leverage Discovery’s assets to enhance the streaming service.

Citing the company’s deep library and extensive portfolio of cable brands like Food Network, Discovery, TLC, HGTV, and others, Discovery executives said they see Discovery + as a worthy supplement to Netflix. The specific subscriber goals for the service have not been determined yet. Verizon was one of the early major drivers of subscriptions, based on its deals with companies like Disney. The telecom giant has been announced as a primary launch partner and is combining free access to Discovery + with several wireless and broadband subscription plans.
“We are delighted to have Pato join our team in this new global leadership role for DTC at a moment of transformation for our company,” Perret said. “Pato has helped Hulu more than triple its subscribers during his tenure and has experience in direct-to-consumer entertainment, sports and linear channels, which is a perfect match with our various exploration offerings around the world. Expanding internationally. “
Prior to joining Hulu, Spagnoletto worked at Steelhouse, Farmers Insurance and Yahoo.
He said, “I couldn’t be more excited to join such a wonderful company at such a delightful time.” “I’ve always loved Discovery and I look forward to joining this talented team and contributing to the next chapter of their huge success.”
