UTA Signs Oscar & Emmy Winning Filmmaker Roger Ross Williams & His Production Company One Story Up – Deadline


UTA Emmy Award-winning director, producer, and writer Roger Ross Williams and his production banner, One Story Up, signed across the board.

Williams is the first African-American director to win an Oscar for his short film Prudence Music. His films include Life is animated, For which he was nominated for an Academy Award and won three Emmy Awards including one for Best Documentary and a Director Award at the Sundance Film Festival. I also take out God loves Uganda, For which it was nominated for an Academy Award; Apollo, Which won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Documentary; Travel while traveling black, Which was nominated for a Primetime Emmy and won a Webby Award; And the American prison.

Williams is also in pre-production for his first written feature, Cassandro, About Lucha Libre wrestler who is openly gay. The movie, which Deadline first told you, will star Gail Garcia Bernal, and it’s produced by La Corrente del Golfo produced by Bernal and Diego Luna.

In 2019, Williams founded the production company One Story Up along with award-winning producer Emmy Geoff Martz, who has produced projects like Netflix’s Patent filesDirected by Williams in the film’s first three hours, and the screen adaptation of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ best-selling movie, Me and the world, For HBO. Currently in development for One Story Up: an untitled Netflix feature-length documentary about civil rights attorney Ben Cramp, short film series with Topic and First Look Media, as well as a doc feature on A&E’s TLC music set, among other titles. Williams will also direct and produce Ibram X. Kendis’ Sealed from the beginningAs well as its counterpart Sealed: Racism, Anti-Racism and You For Netflix, under One Story Up.

Since 2016, Williams has been a member of the board of directors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences representing the Documentary Division and chair of the Documentary Diversity Committee. He is on the advisory board of the Full Frame Film Festival, and on the boards of Docubox Kenya, None On Record, and the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art, Africa.
